Why your scanned PDF's pages are out of order — how to reorder them without uploading anywhere
If your scanner doesn't do two-sided scanning automatically — and a lot of compact document scanners, all-in-one home printers, and phone scanning apps don't — the standard workaround is to scan every front side first, physically flip the whole stack of paper over, and run it through the feeder a second time for the backs. It's a real, widely documented technique, not an improvised hack, and it works. What it also reliably does is hand you the back pages in the exact opposite order from the fronts. That's not a scanner malfunction or a corrupted PDF — it's simple physics — and putting the pages back in the right order is exactly what NearPDF's reorder tools are for: drag pages into place and save, entirely on your device, with nothing ever uploaded anywhere to do it.
Why the backs come out reversed
Tungsten Automation's Kofax Capture documentation walks through this exact workaround under the heading "Scanning Duplex on a Simplex Scanner": scan the two-sided pages face-up to capture every front, then flip the pages over and load them "in the order they came out" to capture every back. Because the whole stack got physically flipped as a single unit, the back of the last page is now the first thing the feeder picks up on the second pass — and the software has to explicitly correct for that. Kofax's own description of the fix says so directly: "Kofax Capture searches for the last placeholder page and replaces it with the first scanned image. Then, it continues to search and replace until no more placeholders or pages exist." A vendor had to write dedicated resequencing logic because a flipped stack scans in reverse by default — this isn't an edge case, it's the mechanical reality of the technique.
Doxie's own support documentation for the Doxie Q scanner describes the identical physical motion in consumer terms, on a completely unrelated product: scan the fronts "face down and top first," then "flip your whole stack over sideways, so that the back of the last page is inserted face down and top first" — and only after that does software step in, because "Doxie's Interleave feature then automatically merges the two stacks (all the fronts, all the backs) into a single, stapled stack in the correct order." One of these is enterprise document-capture software and the other is a small consumer desktop scanner, built by unrelated companies for unrelated markets — and both independently needed to build the same "reverse the second pass back into order" feature. That convergence is a decent sign this is just how manual duplex scanning behaves, not a quirk of either product.
The honest limit: NearPDF doesn't have a one-click "interleave" button
Worth saying plainly, since both sources quoted above are worth being honest about: Kofax Capture and Doxie's own software each ship a dedicated, automatic interleave feature that reads two separate page streams and alternates them for you programmatically. NearPDF doesn't have that button. Every one of NearPDF's tools — merge, split, rotate, delete, reorder, watermark, page numbers, PDF-to-JPG — shares the exact same workspace grid (open any of them and add files to see it), and that shared grid's per-page controls are, deliberately, exactly four: move left, rotate 90°, delete, move right, plus plain drag-and-drop. There's no "alternate these two files automatically" algorithm behind any of them. For a handful of double-sided pages that's a perfectly reasonable amount of dragging. For scanning a 300-page duplex report on a single-sided scanner one page at a time, it genuinely isn't — dedicated capture software, or more simply a scanner with a real duplexing ADF, is the right tool at that volume. NearPDF's reorder tools are built for occasional fixes to a file you already have, not as a substitute for a duplexing scanner.
Fixing it in NearPDF, step by step
- Two separate files (fronts.pdf, backs.pdf). Open NearPDF's merge tool, add fronts.pdf, then add backs.pdf. NearPDF appends a newly added file's pages after whatever's already in the workspace, so the grid will show the fronts — 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 — followed immediately by the backs in the order they were scanned — 10, 8, 6, 4, 2.
- Drag pages into the right order. Using drag-and-drop, the ← / → move buttons on each thumbnail, or the arrow keys once a thumbnail has keyboard focus, move each back page in between the two fronts it belongs next to, until the row reads 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
- Fix rotation if the backs came out sideways or upside down. Flipping a physical stack over often flips the backs' orientation relative to the fronts too — tap ↻ on any thumbnail that needs it before saving. It's the same per-page rotate control covered in more depth in NearPDF's rotation post.
- Already one file, just out of order for a different reason? Skip the merge step. A single-sided-scan-only workaround isn't the only way pages end up scrambled — HP's, Epson's, and Brother's own scanner support documentation all separately describe automatic document feeders that skip or misfeed a sheet mid-batch, which can leave a scan with pages missing from or repeated in the sequence. - Save. Click merge (or save, on the Reorder tool) once the order's right. The file that comes out never left your device to get there.
Where this stops being the right tool
It's worth comparing NearPDF's approach honestly against the alternative most people would reach for otherwise. Adobe's own online "Rearrange PDF pages" tool works the same way at the drag-and-drop level — but its own page states that after you add a file, you have to "sign in" once "Acrobat uploads the file," and that "your file will be securely handled by Adobe servers and deleted unless you sign in to save it," on top of a hard 1,500-page, 100 MB ceiling. NearPDF's reorder tools skip all of that — no account, no upload, no page-count ceiling beyond what your own device's memory can hold — because the entire operation, dragging one thumbnail past another, never had to leave the browser tab in the first place. But scale matters here too: if you're routinely digitizing hundreds of duplex pages a day rather than occasionally fixing one flipped scan, an automatic interleave feature like Kofax's or Doxie's genuinely saves real time that no amount of dragging fifty page pairs by hand will — for high-volume capture, that's the honest answer, not a workaround built for occasional use.
